Stachelvarius Mouthpieces

I co-produced the Stachelvarius Orca saxophone mouthpiece in collaboration with Norbert Stachel, an accomplished multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. He has recorded and performed with Aerosmith, Tower of Power, Roger Waters, Tony Toni Toné, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Prince, Tito Puente, Diana Ross, Boz Scaggs, Neil Diamond, En Vogue, The Temptations, Sheila E, Quincy Jones, Les McCann, Don Cherry, Freddie Hubbard, Roy Hargrove, Andrew Hill, and many others.

Norbert has been refacing woodwind mouthpieces for over 30 years, a process by which the playing characteristics are adjusted and perfected with precision tools. He optimizes to the facing curve that interfaces with the reed and modifies internal dimensions. These changes affect intonation, tonal color, voicing, efficiency, and response. He has a incredible talent for this craft and the ability to dial in a mouthpiece to the individual preferences of the player.

We have similar taste into mouthpieces, and that shared vision helped us design a mouthpiece that combined qualities of our favorite mouthpieces, in fact exceeding them. The Orca is the realization of Norbert’s longtime goal to produce a custom line of saxophone mouthpieces inspired by the form of whales.
