Off the ‘feine
Saturday, December 1st, 2007In order to combat insomnia, I’m ditching caffeine for two weeks retroactive to Wednesday. I’m not a coffee drinker at all, but this does mean giving up my beloved Peach Oo-la-long tea. I’m not happy about that. It’s the most perfect balance of tea and fruity flavor ever devised, with just the right little tad of sweetness. I think it should win a Nobel Teas Prize. I think if every person on the planet sipped a bottle of it, war would stop.
I never drink more than one tea a day, though. This is a practice I had to adopt several years ago in order to prevent caffeine dependency and the associated headaches that would bother me. Now 1/4 the caffeine of coffee you think wouldn’t be all that much, but apparently it’s enough to affect me.
But now I have to go cold turkey (oh how seasonable!) and let my veins run dry of caffeine for a few weeks. For the sake of a good night’s sleep, I have to see if this helps. I’m pretty much on California time right now, despite being in New York. It’s jet lag at a bargain price.
I slept great on Wednesday night and woke up pretty refreshed. No problems existing Thursday and got to sleep a little earlier. Friday, though, got pretty headachey in the evening. Today, I’m groggy and craving the tea. Making up for it by drinking lots of water and exercising.
I feel sorry for my friends who have tried to kick the 6+ cups of joe habit. That’s got to be much worse!
